Galeria Fotografii Miasta Rzeszowa (GFMR) is a municipal cultural institution established by a resolution of the Rzeszów City Council on January 21, 1992. The institution was created as an informal successor to the achievements of the Rzeszów Photographic Society, chiefly thanks to the efforts of Irena Gałuszka — the gallery’s first and long-time director. An active supporter and initiator of its establishment was also the then Mayor of Rzeszów, Mieczysław Janowski.

The primary purpose of the Gallery is to carry out cultural activities, including organizing exhibitions and promoting photography, as well as providing photographic education and archiving and making available photographic collections that form part of the city’s and region’s tangible cultural heritage.

In addition to regular exhibition activity presenting the work of Poland’s leading photographers — both professionals and amateurs — aimed at shaping public awareness and sensitivity in the visual arts, the Gallery maintains its own archive in which it collects, preserves, and provides access to historical photographic collections. These include photographs by members of the former Rzeszów Photographic Society (among others Zdzisław Postępski, Jacek Fischer, Jerzy Jawczak, Janusz Witowicz, Jacek Stankiewicz, Józef Ryciuk and others), the personal collection of Rzeszów documentary photographer Andrzej Listwan, as well as works by other Polish creators, including Professor Józef Robakowski, Paweł Pierściński, and Damazy Kwiatkowski.
