The Market Square in Przemyśl has served as the centre of the city’s life since its foundation in the 14th century. The first townhouses were built of wood, while masonry buildings began to appear in the 16th century.

The square’s stone paving may give the impression of being its oldest feature, but it was actually laid in the 19th century. A walkway runs through the centre of the square. The Town Hall function is performed by a former residential townhouse.

At the centre stands a distinctive monument — a fountain with a small bear — as well as a statue of the Good Soldier Švejk, who is believed to have visited the city. One of the townhouses on the square houses the Museum of the History of Przemyśl.
