Historical
The Przemyśl Fortress is an extensive complex of fortifications around Przemyśl, which at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries became one of the largest and most famous strongholds in Europe.
Construction of the fortress began in the mid-19th century, and its greatest development occurred in the period preceding World War I, when it became a key defensive point of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy. During the war, Przemyśl was the arena of two dramatic sieges that were etched into the military history of Europe. The entire complex included a ring of several dozen permanent and earthen forts, distributed around the city over an area of several dozen square kilometers.
About 40 forts have survived to this day in various conditions – from clearly visible ruins to partially restored sites. Among the most valuable and recognizable are Fort I "Salis Soglio", Fort XI "Duńkowiczki", Fort XIII "San Rideau", and Fort XV "Borek", which is one of the largest and best-preserved fortification works of the fortress. These forts, along with military roads, warehouses, and bunkers, create a unique cultural landscape and constitute the most important material evidence of the history of the Przemyśl Fortress.
