The San is the most important river of the Podkarpacie region, originating in the Bieszczady Mountains and shaping the landscape of southeastern Poland.

The sources of the San River are located in the Eastern Bieszczady Mountains, in Ukrainian territory, at an altitude of approximately 925 m a.s.l., on the southeastern slopes of Mount Piniaszkowy, about 30 meters from the Polish border. From there, the river flows northwest.

Within the Podkarpackie region, the San flows through valleys with diverse topography, creating gorges, sweeping meanders, and natural floodplains, particularly in the areas of Sanok and Przemyśl.

The natural character of the river's upper reaches and the wide valleys of its middle section provide a prime example of the river landscape typical of the Carpathians and the Carpathian Foothills.
