Mamalarka

Here we have Basia. With two small children. With a teenage daughter. With a husband. With a pan after scrambled eggs. With a brush and an easel. Always “with”, rarely alone. Suspended somewhere in between, torn in the middle of an unfinished sentence, searching for a way to “her own room”. A place, in which the world of an artist and a mother not only clashes, but also complement each other.

The movie is a observational documentary, in which the camera does not interfere with the life of its protagonist. We look at Basia in her everyday life, in her well-known household world, which in the situation of a pandemic is a safe space as well as a trap. Raising children not only as a duty but an honest, full of love relationship, often opposes the need of self-fulfilment.

Direct inspiration for the realization of the movie was an artistic series from Barbara Porczyńska with the same title as the movie – “Mamalarka” (“A painter mom”).

Anger, frustration, helplessness, sadness – those are often feelings, which a mother does not release outside. But not letting them exist leads to them eating her from the inside. Basia captured this mute, motherly scream in a very eloquent form – in one, that is very strongly connotated with a domestic life of a woman. From over a scrambled eggs pan, over a cutting board, over a baking form looks at us a full of complex feelings face – a  mother and a painter.
