Arkadiusz Andrejkow needs no introduction to the Podkarpacie region. His shimmering images, emerging from the surfaces of old barn planks, are scattered throughout the region and beyond. The series, collectively titled "Silent Memorial," has been in the works since 2017, when Andrejkow recognized the potential of raw wood as a substrate for his paintings.
The figures the artist evokes are not conceptual portraits but people who once lived in these places. It is an expression of remembrance, sometimes a tribute to ancestors, of sympathy, of symbolism. "Silent Memorial" has exceeded its creator's expectations. After nearly five years of the project, which stemmed from the artist's sensitivity, residents are now taking the initiative and engaging him in the creation of subsequent "descales" (a paraphrase of the word "mural," modified to reflect the painting's substrate).
